Our first stop was the 921 Earthquake Museum. At the museum, many foreigners coming from earthquake-free countries experienced these natural disasters for the first time in the earthquake simulation exhibition. Through this experience, they had a better picture of how much earthquakes affected Taiwanese people’s life. Then we moved on to the Wufong Lin Family Mansion. The Lins were a notable family in Taichung, and had a great influence in Taiwanese history. We learnt about Taiwanese architecture and the history of Taiwan when we were at the mansion.
During the night, we took our foreign friends to Feng Chia Night Market. Night market played an important role in most Taiwanese people’s life. Foreign visitors were encouraged to visit these really crowded night markets. In the night market, we experienced the overwhelming energy, and tried some traditional Taiwanese food. One of the snacks in the night market was stinky tofu, which was one of my absolute favorites and notable for its weird smell. The international students, however, could not withstand the odor and avoided it so much no matter how hard I was trying to convince them to give it a try. Yet, I still strongly recommend foreigners who was taking a trip in Taiwan to try it.
On the second day, we went to Gaomei Wetland and observed the unique ecosystem. Following that was the Dajia Mazu Temple. Religion is a very important part of Taiwanese culture. The way we worshipped gods was considered very unique to international students. They were so interested in the procedure when we were worshipping the gods, so we taught the international students how to offer burning incense and other worshipping methods.
The final part of our trip ended at the Dongfong Bike Trail, a bicycle trail that follows along the Dajia River. This last chapter was the most relaxing of all in the trip. At the end of the trip, I couldn’t help but think about how much effort Student Ambassadors had put in to make this trip possible. Every moment, every bit of effort we’ve put in, left a mark in my mind of how beautiful the whole journey from organizing to the end has been. As the biking trail came to an end, so did the journey. Our trip to Taichung ended here as the sun gradually fell beneath the horizon, which concluded the whole trip with the beautiful orange glow of the sky.
